The red neon light flashed on and off, casting light into the room one minute, and shadows the next. The man on the bed didn't notice, too wrapped up in his heartache to care if he did. His legs were pulled up to his chest, arms hugging them close, head resting on his bent knees. The rough sound of his breathing was the only sound in the room.

Never again, isn't that what you said You've been through this before You swore, this time, you'd think with your head No one would ever have you again And if takin' was gonna get done, you'd decide where and when

Why had he done it? Why bother going back to his wife who had shown she didn't care anymore? His children were grown and had moved out, there was nothing really for him there, but the last flicker of hope in love. His wife had snuffed that when she walked out, on a date with another man. He'd done the only thing he could think of, flown away from the house with only the clothes on his back, and the little bit of money he had in his pocket. Now all he could afford is this cheap motel room, and that would only be for one night.

Just when you think you got it down Your heart securely tied and bound They whisper promises in the dark

He thought about what she had said, that he hadn't been attentive enough for her. What did she mean? He had trained near the house, well within the distance where he could hear if she needed him. He'd stopped roaming around looking for trouble because she didn't like it, even spent nights reading to improve himself. None of that mattered to her. He had stopped insisting on making love with her long ago, knowing that there was no satisfaction in it for him. Why had she said he had taken everything from her, and hadn't returned anything?

Armed and ready, you fought love battles in the night But too many opponents made you weary of the fight Blinded by passion, you foolishly let someone in All the warnings went off in your head, still you had to give in

He rubbed his eyes, hoping the tears would stop soon. A sound had him looking around the small room. Taking a breath, he readied himself for another battle.

"What are you doing here?" He asked.

"I was going to ask you that. This isn't someplace I would expect to find you."

"Just go away and leave me alone. You can kill me tomorrow, tonight I just want to be alone."

"I can't do that. Your pain called me here."

"So. It's my pain, I don't have to share it. Just go away."

"Why do you let her do this?"

"She's my wife." The man on the bed spat out.

"She hasn't been your wife for years. Look someplace else for love if you need it that bad."

"Like where? Anybody else I fall in love with will just do the same thing eventually. I could go to space, but I doubt it would be different there."

"You really are an idiot. It wasn't you that was the problem. You didn't do anything."

"That's what she said. I didn't do anything, so she's with another."

"If you were human, that might matter, but you aren't. She is, and can't deal with you not being like her."

"That's not what she told me."

"It's what she has told others. You frighten her. Too strong and wild, never following the rules, and going your own way. Too unpredictable."

"I can't change what I am. You aren't going to leave, are you?"

"Not yet."

"Great." The man on the bed unfolded his body, stretching out on the bed, resting his head against the wall.

Just when you think you got it down Resistance nowhere to be found They whisper promises in the dark

The other walked over and sat at his side, resting a hand near his hip. He looked at him, not truly trusting him not to say or do something to hurt him more, but hoping that he would ease some of the hurt.

"Why do you want a human anyway?" The other asked.

"This is Earth. The majority of people here are human. I want somebody who will love me, so it stands to reason that I need to look to a human." The one on the bed said, as if the other should know this.

"A human wont satisfy you."

"Why not? My wife is human, she satisfied me for years."

"If you are going to lie, then I'm going to leave. At least don't lie to yourself."

But promises you know what they're for It sounds so convincing, but you heard it before 'Cause talk is cheap and you gotta be sure And so you put up your guard And you try to be hard but your heart says try again

"What about you?"

"What about me?"

"You made me promises. Are you going to lie about them?"

"No. That's why I'm here."

"We both know that you wont stay."

"If I go, then you are going with me. I promise."

"I can almost convince myself you mean that." The one on the bed turned eyes shimmering with tears to the other.

"It's true."

"When?"

"Now, if you like."

"Will it hurt?"

"For a moment. I promise not to cause you undue pain."

"Promise." The man on the bed sighed. Hope shown behind the tears for the first time that night.

The other smiled, then leaned over and lightly kissed the man on the bed.

You desperately search for a way to conquer the fear No line of attack has been planned to fight back the tears Where bold and restless dreams are both won and lost On the edge is where it seems it's well worth the cost

Outside, a flash of light glared through the windows behind the neon sign, overshadowing the red glints for a moment, then slowly dying down. A few minutes later, a man left the motel, his coat collar pulled high against the rain that had started to fall. He paused and looked back, up to the windows behind the neon one last time.

"Good bye, Kakarrot. I hope you find peace in heaven." Vegeta said as he turned and walked home, knowing he had finally kept both of his promises to Goku. He had released him from his misery, making sure he wasn't alone, and that the Saiyan prince would be the one to do it.

Just when you think you got it down Your heart in pieces on the ground They whisper promises in the dark
